Position Summary

The Director for the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Team will be responsible for building and leading a high-quality, US MSL organization. Working closely with the Executive Director of Medical Services, the MSL Director will hire, train, organize and set the tone for a new MSL team for our rare disease portfolio. Together with other Ultragenyx functions, the MSL lead will also be responsible for establishing MSL work instructions, assisting in the build out of relevant corporate policies and SOPs, and the identification of necessary technology to support the team.

This can be a home-office or field based position and requires demonstrated capability to lead MSLs in complex disease areas, deep understanding of how MSLs can support the health care community and interface with the in-house teams, full understanding of the relevant compliance framework for MSL activities, and entrepreneurial drive to establish a critical new capability for Ultragenyx.

Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

- Hire and develop a high-quality U.S. MSL team scaled and organized to support the Ultragenyx pipeline
- Design training and educational program to ensure MSL team members are prepared for their responsibilities
- Be critical member of medical affairs leadership
- Support build out of high-quality, global medical affairs department
- Establish department policies and procedures related to scientific exchange and assist in the creation of relevant corporate policies and SOPs
- Establish collaborations with Clinical Operations to enhance patient enrollment in company-sponsored clinical trials by identifying appropriate clinical trial sites and interacting with investigators in ongoing studies
- Establish collaboration with Patient Diagnosis team to support their efforts
- Establish collaborative and compliant relationship with Commercial colleagues
- Provide scientific support at medical congresses
- Provide timely feedback and insights on emerging clinical/scientific themes and opportunities to internal stakeholders
- Provide scientific support for appropriate educational initiatives.
- Ensure all activities are compliant with company policies and SOPs.

Requirements:

- Advanced degree in clinical specialty strongly preferred (MD, PhD, PharmD) and commensurate experience required: 10+ years of industry experience, including 5+ years of MSL leadership experience, strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience in leading complex MSL organizations
- Experience working with rare diseases preferred
- Excellent communication skills required
- Expert understanding of the health care delivery systems and its impact on patient care
- Values based collaborator - respectful, accountable and collaborative
- Ability to relate and work with a wide range of people to achieve results
- Ability to organize and prioritize own work schedule
- Ability to make decisions which have a significant impact on the department's credibility, operations, and services
- Ability to create materials such as reports, presentations for inside and outside the organization, and present/speak to groups
- Approximately 30-40% travel is required; overnight and international travel is required as needed.
